Indonesia can accommodate almost every travel style, from family-run guesthouses and local restaurants to private pool villas and fully crewed luxury yachts. That flexibility is one of the country’s great strengths—but it also makes the question “How much does a trip to Indonesia cost?” impossible to answer with a single number.

A realistic budget depends on the destination, season, hotel standard, number of domestic flights and whether you choose shared or private experiences. Bali and Java can offer excellent value, while remote regions such as Raja Ampat cost more to reach and operate in.

The estimates below are planning ranges, not quotations. Prices fluctuate, and international flights are excluded.

Typical daily budgets per person

Travel style — Indicative daily budget — What it generally includes * Budget — IDR 500,000–900,000 — Guesthouse or hostel, local meals, basic transport and selected activities * Comfortable — IDR 1,400,000–3,000,000 — Good hotel, varied dining, private transfers or driver sharing and guided experiences * Luxury — IDR 4,000,000–8,000,000+ — Five-star accommodation, private driver, fine dining and privately guided touring * Private yacht journey — Quoted per vessel — Crew, cabins, meals and activities; inclusions vary significantly

These ranges work best as starting points. A night at a premium resort or a private helicopter transfer can quickly exceed the daily average, while several days in a quieter region may cost less.

Accommodation costs

Accommodation is often the largest land-based expense.

Budget rooms and homestays can begin around IDR 250,000–600,000 per night, depending on location and season. Well-reviewed mid-range hotels and private rooms commonly fall between IDR 800,000 and IDR 2,500,000. Four- and five-star resorts may begin around IDR 3,000,000 and extend far beyond IDR 10,000,000 per night for suites and private-pool villas.

Bali has the country’s broadest range, but location matters. Beachfront Seminyak, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua generally command higher rates than less developed parts of the island. Remote luxury resorts in Sumba or Raja Ampat may include meals, transfers and activities, making a direct room-rate comparison misleading.

Always compare the complete package: taxes, breakfast, airport transfers, extra beds, cancellation terms and mandatory festive-season meals.

Food and drink

Local food remains excellent value. A simple meal at a warung may cost approximately IDR 30,000–80,000, while a casual international restaurant might be IDR 100,000–300,000 per person. Fine dining, imported wine and luxury-resort restaurants can cost considerably more.

Alcohol is relatively expensive because of taxes and distribution costs. Families and groups can manage spending by mixing resort dining with carefully selected local restaurants rather than eating every meal at the hotel.

Private drivers and local transportation

Private drivers are one of the most comfortable ways to explore Bali and Java. A full-day vehicle with driver may broadly range from IDR 700,000 to IDR 1,500,000 depending on vehicle class, distance, fuel, parking, overtime and whether a licensed guide is included.

Premium vans, executive vehicles and larger family transport cost more. On remote islands, vehicle availability may be limited and rates can reflect fuel and logistics.

Ride-hailing apps are useful in some urban and tourist areas, but they are not a complete solution for a multi-stop itinerary. A planned driver makes it easier to manage luggage, timing, children and lesser-known destinations.

Domestic flights and ferries

Indonesia’s scale means domestic transportation deserves its own budget. Short domestic flights can sometimes be inexpensive, but popular routes and holiday periods rise quickly. Allow a broad planning range of IDR 800,000–3,000,000 or more per person, per flight segment, depending on route and baggage.

Remote destinations often require a connection through Jakarta, Makassar, Surabaya, Bali or Sorong. Checked baggage, sports equipment and schedule changes can add costs. For an international connection, a generous buffer or overnight stop is often worth the extra hotel expense.

Fast boats and ferries vary from basic public services to premium transfers. The cheapest ticket is not always the best value when weather, luggage handling and connection reliability matter.

Tours, diving and special experiences

Temple visits and local attractions may cost relatively little, while private guiding, volcano treks and specialist experiences cost more. A privately guided day can range from several hundred thousand rupiah to several million depending on transport, permits, meals and group size.

Diving costs depend on location, equipment, certification and whether the dives are land-based or conducted from a liveaboard. Remote destinations require more fuel and logistics. Travelers should budget separately for marine-park fees, diving insurance, equipment rental, nitrox and gratuities when they are not included.

How much does an Indonesian yacht charter cost?

Yacht pricing has an exceptionally wide range. Shared liveaboard places may cost a few hundred US dollars per person per night, while a full private phinisi can range from several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars per night. Published 2026 private-charter rates across the market broadly begin around USD 2,000–3,500 per night for simpler vessels and can exceed USD 25,000 per night for flagship yachts.

The meaningful number is the total trip price. Ask whether the quotation includes fuel, crew, meals, non-alcoholic drinks, diving, equipment, national-park fees, airport transfers, taxes and relocation charges. Two similar-looking nightly rates may include very different services.

Sample trip budgets

Ten-night comfortable trip for two

A comfortable Bali-and-Java journey with quality hotels, private transfers, guided touring and domestic transport might fall around IDR 45,000,000–90,000,000 for two people, excluding international flights. Premium hotels and private experiences can raise the total.

Twelve-night luxury family trip

A family using two rooms or a two-bedroom villa, five-star resorts, a private vehicle and privately guided activities could reasonably plan from IDR 150,000,000 upward. Room configuration, school-holiday dates and domestic flights make a major difference.

Bali plus a private Komodo yacht

Combining a land itinerary with three to seven nights aboard a private yacht creates the largest price variation. Vessel category, number of cabins, charter dates and inclusions determine the final total. Request a full quotation rather than relying on a generic per-person estimate.

How to keep the budget under control

  • Travel in May, June, September or another suitable shoulder period.
  • Spend longer in fewer regions to reduce flights and transfers.
  • Decide which experiences should be private and where shared touring is acceptable.
  • Compare total inclusions, not only the headline room or yacht rate.
  • Book family room configurations and popular vessels early.
  • Keep a contingency fund for weather or schedule changes.

Build a realistic Indonesia budget

The best budget is not necessarily the lowest one. It is the amount that supports safe connections, appropriate accommodation and the experiences that matter most to you.
