The best time to visit Indonesia depends on where you are going. Stretching more than 5,000 kilometers from west to east, the archipelago does not follow one perfectly synchronized weather calendar. Bali may be entering its driest months while Raja Ampat is experiencing stronger winds, and a route that works beautifully in Komodo may be less suitable for the Spice Islands.
For much of Java, Bali, Lombok and Komodo, April to October is broadly considered the drier period, while November to March brings more frequent rain. Raja Ampat’s favored cruising season is almost the reverse: calmer conditions are generally found from October to April.
That regional contrast is the key to planning Indonesia well.
Indonesia’s two main seasons
Indonesia has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. Instead of four temperate seasons, most destinations experience a wetter season and a drier season.
Rain in Indonesia rarely means that every day is lost. Tropical showers can be intense but short, often arriving in the afternoon or overnight. The wetter months bring greener landscapes, fuller waterfalls and fewer visitors, while the dry season provides more predictable conditions for trekking, island hopping and outdoor sightseeing.
Weather patterns are becoming less predictable, so historical seasons should guide planning rather than serve as a guarantee.
Best time for Bali, Java and Lombok
For Bali and much of Java and Lombok, the drier period generally runs from April through October. May, June and September are particularly attractive because they often combine good weather with fewer visitors than the July and August peak.
July and August offer strong conditions for beaches, volcano treks and outdoor touring, but hotels, guides and popular experiences should be booked early. December and early January are also busy because of international holidays even though rain is more likely.
The greener months can be rewarding for Ubud, central Bali and Java’s cultural centers. Travelers should simply build more flexibility into road journeys and outdoor activities.
Best time for Komodo National Park
Komodo is accessible for much of the year, but April through November is the most popular window for boat journeys, trekking and island exploration. The landscape changes noticeably: hills are greener after the rains and gradually become golden as the dry season advances.
April to June often offers green scenery and pleasant sailing conditions. July and August are popular and can be windy in exposed waters. September through November can deliver an appealing combination of drier weather, warm seas and wildlife encounters.
The best month also depends on whether your priority is dragons, manta rays, diving, photography or quieter anchorages. A private itinerary can adapt the route to the season and sea conditions.
Best time for Raja Ampat
Raja Ampat’s main cruising and diving season generally runs from October to April, when seas are commonly calmer. This is an important difference from Bali and Komodo.
The period is excellent for snorkeling, diving, island viewpoints and journeys between remote anchorages. Liveaboards often reposition between Komodo and Raja Ampat as the seasons change, which creates opportunities for longer expedition routes through the Banda Sea and Spice Islands.
From May to September, stronger winds and rougher seas can affect some crossings and liveaboard schedules. Land-based stays may still operate, but the itinerary requires more careful local planning.

January
Expect wetter conditions in Bali, Java and Lombok, along with lush landscapes and holiday-season demand early in the month. Raja Ampat is in its prime cruising period. Build flexibility into domestic connections.
February
Rain remains common across western and central Indonesia. This can be a quieter, better-value time for cultural travel, while Raja Ampat continues to offer favorable seasonal conditions.
March
The wet season begins easing in many western destinations. Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence, may fall in March and brings a unique cultural experience along with a complete island-wide pause, including airport closure for the designated period.
April
April is a transition month and one of the most versatile times to travel. Bali and Java become drier, Komodo’s hills can still be green, and Raja Ampat may remain suitable before its windier period.
May
May is one of the strongest all-round months for Bali, Java, Lombok and Komodo. Conditions are generally drier, scenery remains fresh and peak holiday crowds have not fully arrived.
June
June is excellent for outdoor itineraries, trekking and sailing around Komodo. It is also a popular month, so confirm preferred hotels and yachts early.
July
July brings peak-season demand across Bali and many western destinations. The weather is usually favorable, but prices and visitor numbers rise. Wind can affect some sea journeys.
August
August is dry and popular in Bali, Java, Lombok and Komodo. It is well suited to volcano treks and beach travel, although exposed crossings may feel choppy. Raja Ampat is outside its principal liveaboard season.
September
September often combines excellent weather with slightly lower demand after the European summer holidays. It is one of our favorite months for a Bali-and-Komodo itinerary.
October
October is a valuable transition month. Bali and Komodo may remain dry, while Raja Ampat’s main season begins. Some yachts reposition eastward through the Banda Sea.
November
Rain becomes more likely in Bali and Java, but it does not necessarily dominate each day. Komodo can still be rewarding, and Raja Ampat moves into a strong cruising period.
December
December combines wetter weather in Bali with high festive-season demand. Raja Ampat is seasonally attractive, but flights and premium accommodations should be booked well ahead.
